1783 Simon Boivar born in Caracas, Venezuela, on July 24th. -- 1789 French Revolution.-- 1799 Simon Bolivar goes to Spain to be educated and obtain "polish".-- 1802 Bolivar marries his cousin, Maria Teresa de Toro, in Madrid. She dies eight months later in Caracas.-- 1808 Joseph Bonaparte crowned King of Spain by his brother, Napoleon, deposing Ferdinand VII. Spanish colonies refuse to accept Joseph as king.-- 1810 Bolivar goes to England as Venezuelan envoy. Brings Francisco Miranda back with him to Venezuela.-- 1811 Venezuela declares independence on July 5th. Miranda placed head of goverment.-- 1812 Earthquake in Caracas kills thousands. Crushes republican goverment. Bolivar continues fighting in Venezuela until his defeat in 1814.--British defeat Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. Ferdinand VII returnet to Spanish throne.-- Americans defeat British at the Battle of New Orleans . Bolivar in exile in Jamaica, then travels to Haiti. (At this time, Haiti and the United States are the only countries in the Western Hemisphere to have achieved independence.-- 1816 Bolivar and 250 of his men return to Venezuela with money and arms donated by President Petion of Haiti.-- 1819 Bolivar convenes a Congress at Angostura, declaring he will rule by under a constitution. In one of history´s greatest feats, Bolivar crosses the Andes, defeats Spanish at Boyacá, liberates Colombia.-- 1820 Armistice signed between Bolivar and Marshal Pablo Morillo. Morillo returns to Spain.-- 1821 Armistice broken. Outnumbered, Bolivar defeats Spanish Army at the Battle of Carabobo. All Venezuela is free. With Colombia, they form the Republic of Great Colombia with Simon Bolivar as president. Lima falls to General José de San Martin of Argentina. Panama revolts from Spain, joins Bolivar´s Great Colombia.-- Bloody Battles of Bombaná and Pichincha liberate Quito. Manuela Sáenz Becomes Bolivar´s mistress. Bolivar Annexes Guayaquil to Great Colombia. Historic meeting between Bolivar and San Martin in Guayaquil.-- 1823 President Monroe issues Monroe Doctrine.-- Simon Bolivar enters Lima.-- 1824 Battle of Junin, Bolivar defeats Royal Cavalry. Battle of Ayacucho. Marshal Sucre defeats two Spanish Armies. All South America is free.-- 1827 Bolivar returns to Bogota. Conflict with Santander. Bolivar subdues Paez in Vnezuela.-- 1828 Assassination plot against Bolivar. Manuela saves his life. However, the fact that some of the very people he freed tried to kill him affects the Liberator profoundly.-- 1830 Exiled in Santa Marta, Colombia, Simon Bolivar dies of tuberculosis complicated by pneumonia on December 17th.-- 1842 Realization of Bolivar´s genius and appreciation of his accomplishments cause a complete re-evaluation of the man. His body is brought back to Caracas to be placed in the Pantheaon of Heroes, where he lies today, honored and revered as the father of six South American nations.
